BEIRUT - Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr indicted on Wednesday an Abdullah Azzam Brigades commander and twelve other people for belonging to the Al-Qaeda linked group.
The judge accused Jamal Dafterdar and the others of planning to conduct terror acts, recruiting, training and transferring people out of the country, and forging official papers and IDs, the National News Agency reported.
They were also accused of shooting missiles at Israel and owning weapons and explosives.
The Lebanese army on January 15 apprehended suspected Abdullah Azzam Brigades official Dafterdar in a dawn raid on the western Beqaa town of Kamed al-Lawz.
Dafterdar is suspected of being linked to Abdullah Azzam Brigades chief Majid al-Majid, who died in a Beirut military hospital on January 4 after he was arrested by Lebanese army intelligence on December 26.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the November bombings outside Iran’s embassy in southern Beirut that left over 20 people dead.
The attack on the embassy was part of a series of bombings that have targeted Shiite-populated targets since Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announced in May 2013 that his party was fighting on behalf of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war.
The Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon as well as the Islamic State of Iraq have claimed responsibility for a number of the terror attacks.
