BEIRUT: The union of employees at the Middle East Airlines denied Tuesday that a worker at the airline had taunted and acted inappropriately toward wheelchair-bound journalist Roula al-Helou, accusing her of exploiting the media to further her cause.
According to a statement, MEA’s employees were “the most honorable,” and “have never and would never treat any passenger on any given day in the way that Roula al-Helou had tried to portray.”
It stressed that “the appropriate response will come at the appropriate time.” Helou was prevented from boarding a Middle Eastern Airlines plane over the weekend and said she planned to file a lawsuit after staff at the company allegedly humiliated her for not being able to walk.
The union’s statement said there was a “clear exploitation” of the media on Helou’s part, adding that the journalist said she had never been treated in this manner before despite having traveled with the airline many times.
