BEIRUT: Three inmates escaped from Roumieh prison Monday but security forces were able to capture two of them, security sources told The Daily Star.
Authorities caught Mohammad al-Jouni, a Lebanese prisoner accused of murdering a person from al-Jurdi family, and Said Sabra, a Syrian.
Security forces are pursuing the third, a Syrian identified as Muhannad Abdel-Rahman.
The sources said that the inmates escaped at 4:00 am from the bloc housing prisoners who have been sentenced.
The Internal Security Forces and Lebanese Army patrols searched for them in the woods surrounding the prison as soon as their escape was discovered, the sources said.
Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk told the voice of Lebanon radio station that the security forces hope to arrest the third fugitive by noon.
The officers suspected of dereliction of duty will be punished, he added.
