BEIRUT – Interior Minister Nohad al-Mashnuq and Defense Minister Ashraf Rifi promised to satisfy the requests made by inmates of Roumieh Prison, after 200 detainees went on a hunger strike to protest poor conditions in the facility.
Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Friday commissioned Judge Dani al-Zaanni to meet with the prisoners, listen to their demands, and restore calm in the prison.
Zaanni took note of the inmates’ requests after they complained about slow trials, not being taken to court, not having proper medical treatment, and being served poor quality food.
The Interior and Defense Ministers vowed to undertake measures to improve the inmates’ conditions as of Monday, after which the prisoners called off their hunger strike.
