Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk Wednesday said that preparations were underway to renovate the notorious Roumieh Prison, according to his Twitter account.

“#Roumieh_Prison has turned into an operations room for vice in Lebanon, and preparation is underway with the Internal Security Forces to reorganize and restore it,” Machnouk tweeted.

The interior minister met Wednesday with the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces’ Prison Authority in the presence of representatives of the ISF, the Council for Development and Reconstruction and advertising agency M&C Saatchi to discuss financing mechanisms to set up new prison complexes, according to his Twitter account.

The neglected Roumieh Prison suffers from overcrowding and violent encounters between inmates. Funds allocated to renovate the facility were mismanaged, leaving the interior in a decrepit state.
