Women’s rights organization Kafa criticized Wednesday Lebanese President Michel Sleiman for signing an amended version of the domestic violence law, saying it would not back down from achieving full protection for women in the country.

In a statement, Kafa said the president had signed the law after promising to look into the amendments.

“Therefore, our journey will not end here and we will not back down from completing what we started until we achieve full and effective protection for women,” the statement said.

The alterations included a new title for the bill, which now refers to violence against the family as opposed to violence against women, and the removal of a key clause criminalizing marital rape.
