Iran on Wednesday sent aid to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon for Syrians and Palestinians fleeing the war in neighboring Syria.

“Today we [sent] the first batch of aid for the Syrian and Palestinian brothers who were forced to flee dear Syria and come to Lebanon,” Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghadanfar Rokn Abadi said on Wednesday.

The Iranian envoy added that “this aid expresses the Iranian Islamic Republic’s humane solidarity and commitment to rightful humanitarian causes.”

Lebanon is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violence. More than 212,000 refugees are registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon.
