Lebanese youths demonstrated near the Grand Serail in Downtown Beirut Tuesday to demand government action to resolve a garbage crisis that has seen trash spilling out of dumpsters in Beirut and Mount Lebanon since Sunday.
Several dozen held banners denouncing the accumulation of garbage on the streets of the capital, and what they described as officials' lax response to the issue.
“The smell of the land is calling on us,” read one poster.
“The reused, recycled members of Parliament are an open sewage system of corruption,” read another.
Demonstrators clutched on to large garbage bags and wore medical face masks during the protest.
“The situation is trash... trashy government,” screamed one protester.
Trash began spilling out of dumpsters in Beirut and Mount Lebanon hours after waste management company Sukleen suspended garbage collection in Beirut and Mount Lebanon Sunday, two days after the Naameh landfill was permanently shut.
