Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said Tuesday that recent escape attempts by dozens of inmates at the Roumieh prison were due to faulty security of some doors at the complex. In response, one of the four prison buildings has been vacated and renovation is under way with the beginning of summer projected as a completion date, Charbel told a local radio station. The prison will be equipped with surveillance cameras as of next month, he added. Escaping from Roumieh after renovations are complete will be very difficult, Charbel said, because the prisoners’ every move will be watched. Also, traveling from one place to another within the prison walls will now require eye and handprints be taken.
