Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour said that the Lebanese government should pride itself in the program aimed at supporting families living below the poverty line.

“I can say that the program has reached a stage that would be a source of pride for the government,” Abu Faour told reporters on Tuesday at the government headquarters in Beirut’s Grand Serail.

According to the minister, the program entailed provisions of free of charge health services for 18,800 Lebanese families living in extreme poverty.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati commended the program, saying that it has been “another step made by the government toward improving social safety nets away from any sectarian or political considerations.”

His comments came during the signing ceremony of the new program, which Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil attended.

The health minister, in turn, praised the new program and underscored the importance of the nonpartisan government move “that would benefit opposition and pro-government alike.”
