Lebanon’s military prosecutor Monday indicted the head of the Fatah al-Islam detainees in Roumieh Prison for the murder of a Palestinian prisoner two weeks ago.

Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr filed charges against the head of the Islamist inmates, nicknamed “Abu al-Walid,” for the killing of prisoner Ghassan al-Qandaqli.

This indictment followed the military court judge’s Friday charges against nine other inmates for the abovementioned murder, as well as two officers who were charged with neglect.

The case was then turned over to the Military Investigative Judge Fadi Sawan.

Two weeks earlier, the National News Agency reported that Palestinian prisoner Ghassan al-Qendaqli allegedly committed suicide in the bathroom of his cell by hanging himself using a woolen scarf.

However, an officer in the Roumieh jail told As-Safir newspaper on Tuesday that the prisoner was beaten two hours prior to his death by Fatah al-Islam inmates, adding that “they are likely [responsible] for his death.”
