Lebanese President Michel Suleiman on Wednesday said that his country was determined to keep the border open to Syrian refugees fleeing violence in their country.

During an UN donor conference held in Kuwait for Syrian refugees, Suleiman also said that Lebanon’s resources and capabilities were not enough to handle the immigration flux.

“Lebanon is still recovering from previous crises… the available resources and capabilities do not match the large influx of Syrians, which we hope does not increase,” the president added.

Suleiman voiced hope that the international community supports Lebanon’s efforts to draw an emergency plan that can handle any potential developments.

“We hope the support is not only financial, but would be characterized with a comprehensive program on the burdens resulted from the displacement, especially that Lebanon cannot host all the refugees, whose number is increasing day by day,” Suleiman said.

Lebanon is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, which has killed more than 60,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011.
