Health Ministry inspectors Monday issued a penalty against a municipality in south Lebanon for burning garbage and endangering public health.
“A penalty has been issued against the Majdalyoun Municipality after it was revealed that trash was being collected and burned regularly near residential areas, causing health hazards to citizens and pollution,” a statement issued by the ministry said.
Majdalyoun’s Mayor Boutros Saliba denied in a statement later in the day the municipality’s involvement in the trash burning.
“The Majdalyoun Municipality categorically denies undertaking such actions, because it is against the burning of trash ... its trash is collected everyday by the NTCC company, and no garbage is left to burn,” the state-run National News Agency quoted Saliba as saying.
The Health Ministry issued penalties Saturday against four other municipalities in south Lebanon after they were accused of also burning trash at dump sites.
