United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly met with Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghadanfar Roken Abadi to discuss the Syrian refugees issues currently affecting Lebanon.

Plumbly thanked Iran following the meeting for “the step it made in providing humanitarian aid for Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.”

Meanwhile, Abadi said that “the Iranian policy has always been to support Lebanon’s stability, sense of national unity, and harness coexistence across Lebanon’s sects.”

The statement issued by the Iranian embassy in Lebanon also stated that the “Iranian Islamic Republic has begun distributing 30 thousand nutritional portions and blankets to Syrian and Palestinian refugees currently in Lebanon in coordination with the Lebanese authorities and the UNHCR.”

Beirut is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of Syrian refugees who look to neighboring Lebanon for safe haven. More than 212,000 refugees are now registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon.

Syria is witnessing a violent uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, which has killed more than 60,000 people since its outbreak in March of last year, according to figures released by the United Nations.
