The Lebanese Center for Human Rights Holds Training on Monitoring and Fact-Checking Human Rights Violations

Beirut, Lebanon, December 10, 2023 – On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Lebanese Center held a three-day training on monitoring, fact-checking, and documenting human rights violations. The training brought together professionals from a variety of backgrounds working in journalism, social work, and human rights. The training is part of the " Safeguarding Human Rights Amid Crisis in Lebanon " program implemented by the Center with the support of the United Nations Democracy Fund.

Dr. Walid Al-Saqqaf, a senior lecturer at Södertörn University in Stockholm, led an intensive training session focusing on critical aspects of human rights monitoring and fact-checking processes. The training commenced by delving into essential tools and platforms utilized in monitoring and reporting human rights violations. Subsequently, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on assessing sources and verifying claims, culminating in a comprehensive exploration of fact-checking methods using open-source intelligence and artificial intelligence tools on the final day.

The primary aim of this initiative is to advocate for the fundamental concept of human rights, striving towards a more equitable and just political system. It seeks to cultivate a pervasive human rights culture while fostering enhanced understanding and proficiency in effectively addressing these critical issues.

Furthermore, the Center underscores the utmost significance of vigilance in monitoring, fact-checking, and meticulously documenting instances of human rights violations. It seeks to actively raise awareness, recognizing these vital endeavors as pivotal in a country where fundamental human rights are disregarded, and citizens lack confidence in holding those in power accountable.
