In light of accumulating crises and enduring inequalities in Lebanon, prisoners have found themselves facing a dire situation once again: The denial of their access to healthcare and medication, which has become exacerbated within the confines of Roumieh prison.

Today, medical personnel in most Lebanese prisons are on strike, and life-saving medication has become scarce, leaving nearly 60 prisoners suffering from psychiatric problems and disorders without access to their much-needed prescribed medications. The urgency of their plight cannot be overlooked, and the need for action has become urgent, as mental health is just as important as physical health.

To this end, the Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) is launching a fundraising campaign with a mission to provide these individuals with the urgent medication they need and unequivocally deserve. Our immediate goal is to secure the monthly medication required for prisoners suffering from psychiatric problems and disorders, totaling approximately 240 boxes of various medications every month.

The right to health was enshrined as a human right in the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. We cannot stand by today and watch people suffer due to the lack of medication they urgently need, while their situation keeps deteriorating due to not having access to their most basic rights. Acknowledging health as a human right recognizes a legal obligation on states to ensure access to timely, acceptable, and affordable healthcare for all citizens. Regrettably, the Lebanese State finds itself incapable of solving this pressing issue in the near future. Thus, it is our duty, as an organization with human rights at the core of its mission, to step in before it is too late.

We call upon compassionate individuals and organizations to rally behind us in this crucial endeavor. Help us spread the word to as many people as possible by shedding light on this injustice and using your voices to echo their cries.
