A man involved in a spree of kidnappings in the country last year was released Friday on a LL15 million bail ($10,000), judicial sources told The Daily Star Friday.
Maher Meqdad, who was in jail on charges of forming an armed organization aimed at carrying out terrorist acts and kidnapping, was freed after the military tribunal recommended he be released.
The court, presided over by Judge Khalil Ibrahim, agreed to release Meqdad to allow him to attend his mother’s funeral.
Maher, along with seven other members of his family and two Syrian nationals were arrested in separate house raids by the Lebanese Army in September and October last year.
The Meqdads caused a state of chaos in the country for around two months after the family’s so-called military wing said it was responsible for abducting over 20 Syrians and a Turkish businessman in retaliation for the abduction of their kinsman Hassan Meqdad by the Free Syrian Army in Syria.
The Lebanese Army eventually succeeded in releasing all of their captives and the Meqdad members were arrested.
