U.N. official Derek Plumbly discussed with Prime Minister Najib Mikati Tuesday the latest developments in Lebanon, including the Syrian refugee crisis and upcoming elections.
“We discussed the issue of Syrian refugees and their conditions and the follow up to the international donor meeting in Kuwait,” Pumbly said following the meeting at the Grand Serail.
“We also discussed security issues and the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 as we regularly do in our meetings,” he added.
On parliamentary elections scheduled in June, Plumbly said he and Mikati expressed hope that discussions in the parliamentary subcommittee “will be successful in reaching agreement soon.”
“The holding of free and fair elections on time in accordance with the constitutional requirements is important for democracy and stability in Lebanon,” he stressed.
Plumbly said the U.N. is helping with technical preparations for the elections, as they have in past years.
“It is important that technical preparations continue to move forward without delay, to ensure that the elections are held in a timely fashion whatever the electoral law agreed,” he added.
