Several inmates staged a protest in Bloc B in Roumieh prison over transferring another prisoner into another cell inside the facility, vowing to escalate their actions, the state-run News Agency reported on Friday.
Around 60 inmates began rioting overnight over transferring prisoner Mohammed Abdul Hajj to the department of convicts.
The inmates tried to press the prison's administration to return Abdul Hajj back to Bloc B as he “owed them $10,000.”
The news agency said that the inmates were forced back into their cells but vowed to stage another protest later on Friday.
Roumieh, the oldest and largest of Lebanon's overcrowded prisons, has witnessed sporadic prison breaks in recent years and escalating riots over the past months as inmates living in poor conditions demand better treatment.
