First lady Wafaa Sleiman stressed Monday the need to implement projects that advance the status of women in Lebanon and called for amendments to discriminatory laws targeting them.
Sleiman was speaking during a conference organized by the May Chidiac Foundation-Media Institute entitled “Women in the Front Lines,” at the Phoenicia hotel in Beirut.
“I have worked hard through the National Commission for Lebanese Women to implement a number of projects.
The most prominent [project] is the amendment of five laws that are discriminatory against women that have negative economic and social repercussions on their lives,” Sleiman said.
“In the midst of the historic changes in the Arab world, what matters to me is to maintain the achievements women have made over the past few decades in order to consolidate and develop them,” she added.
