Egyptian nongovernmental organizations have allocated $1 million worth of aid for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Ashraf Hamdi said Tuesday.
“A $1 million aid of blankets, clothes and food by Egyptian nongovernmental organizations will be distributed to Syrian refugees starting tomorrow [Wednesday] in the Bekaa [Valley] region,” said Hamdi following a meeting with Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.
He noted that preparations for more similar aid was under way.
Lebanon has appealed to the Arab League and the international donor countries for some $200 million to help the government cope with the rising number of Syrian refugees in the country.
Over 300,000 refugees have fled their home country and sought refuge in Lebanon since the beginning of the uprising against President Bashar Assad.
With no end of the raging violence in Syria in sight, the U.N. has said it expects the number of refugees to reach 1.1 million by next June.
