The EU on Tuesday announced that it was giving 30 million Euros in aid to Lebanon to help the country handle the growing influx of Syrian refugees fleeing violence in their war-torn country.

“Lebanon receives the highest number of people fleeing the horrible bloodshed in Syria and we know that it puts this country under enormous strain,” a statement issued by EU quoted European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule as saying.

“The hospitality and generosity displayed by the Lebanese towards their neighbors is admirable and commendable," he added.

"The European Union remains committed to assisting the Lebanese Government in its response to the refugee crisis."

The EU envoy made his announcement following meetings with President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati during a visit to Beirut.

The statement added that after the grant, the EU has now provided a total of 75 million Euros in “humanitarian and non-humanitarian aid."

Lebanon has been facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, which has killed more than 70,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011.

Over 300,000 Syrian refugees are believed to be residing in Lebanon.
