Military Prosecutor Saqr Saqr requested Wednesday a sentence of life in prison with hard labor for a Hezbollah member accused of attempting to assassinate MP Butros Harb.
Saqr’s decision came a month after he charged Mohammad Hayek, a member of Hezbollah’s security apparatus, with the attempt on the Batroun lawmaker’s life.
Hayek, who remains at large, was also accused of carrying out acts of terror after planting a bomb in the elevator of the building that houses Harb’s office in Badaro, Beirut, in July 2012.
Saqr referred the case to Military Investigative Judge Fadi Sawwan who will then issue an indictment against Hayek and refer to case the Military tribunal for trial.
According to security sources, Hezbollah has refused to hand over one of its members.
The resistance group has denied involvement in the case.
Harb, who currently resides at his Hazmieh residence, has blasted his rivals in Hezbollah for failure to hand over the suspect for interrogation.
He has also slammed the government for remaining silent about ministers aligned with the resistance group who he alleges provided cover for Hayek.
