Palestinian refugees residing at the Jal al-Bahr refugee camp blocked the highway leading to the southern city of Tyre Sunday, in protest at the death of an elderly woman who was hit overnight by an unidentified motorist. Nafila Faour, 80, was killed Saturday in a hit-and-run by a speeding driver.
The protesters demanded that speed bumps be erected at the entrance to the camp to slow traffic and reduce accidents, which have claimed the lives of five residents in the last two years.
Protesters put cement blocks and tires in the road, preventing motorists from passing for two hours until the Army and Internal Security Forces and Civil Defense units reopened the road.
The Jal al-Bahr camp, just north of Tyre, is not registered with the United Nations.
