Lebanese attorney Emile Aoun became the first attorney from his country to be accredited by the International Criminal Court, STL spokesperson Martin Youssef said Thursday.

Aoun currently serves as a defense lawyer for one of the four suspects indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon for the 2005 assassination of former Premier Rafiq Hariri.

The ICC is the global court mandated to prosecute people for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Lebanon has not ratified the Rome Statute treaty that founded the court.
