BEIRUT: State Prosecutor Hatem Madi chaired a meeting at his office Monday to discuss solutions for the chronic problem of overcrowded prisons across Lebanon.
The meeting was attended by senior judges, including Military Tribunal Judge Saqr Saqr, acting Director-General of the Internal Security Forces Brig. Gen. Roger Salem and gendarmerie chief Brig. Gen.
Joseph Doweihi, the state-run National News Agency reported.
To date, the number of prisoners has reached 5,900, while Lebanon’s jails have a total capacity to house 2,800 inmates, An emergency committee was formed to draw up a comprehensive study on ideas and solutions for the problem of overcrowded prisons, NNA said.
