BEIRUT: Two UNHCR-recognized African refugees began a hunger strike Tuesday to demand resettlement in another country to help their daughter, according to a statement from the Lebanese Center for Human Rights.
A Somali refugee named Gigi, 30, and her Sudanese husband Mohammad, 41, arrived in Lebanon during the 1990s to flee persecution in Sudan.
They went on hunger strike to secure a better future for their daughter Lamis, 4, who has no legal status in Lebanon.
“After all these years of suffering, our happiness is gone; our sole purpose now is to give our daughter a future,” said Mohammad.
“We would even accept that she is sent without us to a country that would protect her rights.”
