The United Nations said that the number of refugees in Lebanon might soon constitute around 20 percent of the country’s population.

According to a statement released on Tuesday evening by the UN following the visit of UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos to Lebanon, the number of refugees fleeing the violence in Syria “might reach one million people by the end of the year.”

“The crisis keeps on negatively affecting the economy and the provision of basic services in the country, such as health and education,” Amos was also quoted as saying during her recent visit to Lebanon.

“We should do everything we can to help the Lebanese government. The thousands of refugees who cross the border everyday are a great burden, not only on the country itself but also on those who host them,” she added.

Lebanon is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which has killed more than 94,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011.
