BEIRUT: The National Association for Combating Discrimination Against Women urged lawmakers Thursday to pass a draft law criminalizing domestic violence that has been languishing in Parliament for nearly three years.
The issue of domestic violence has been pushed to the fore by a wave of public outrage following the death last week of Roula Yaacoub, allegedly at the hands of her husband, in the Akkar town of Halba.
The association said it would lobby Speaker Nabih Berri and take part in a protest in support of the law at 10:30 a.m. in Riad al-Solh Square Monday, scheduled to coincide with a session of Parliament.
