BEIRUT: A Parliament committee endorsed Monday a draft law aimed at protecting women from domestic violence.
Activists have lobbied for the adoption of the draft law. Some 50 activists demonstrated Monday at Riad Solh square, ahead of the unanimous vote by Parliament’s Joint Committees.
The latest victim of domestic violence was 31-year-old Roula Yaacoub, who was found beaten and comatose in the northern town of Halba after midnight earlier this month. Yaacoub died upon arrival to the hospital. She was allegedly beaten to death by her husband.
Activists, women’s groups and local residents Sunday urged Parliament to approve the draft law during a protest in Akkar over Yaacoub’s case.
