Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said that Lebanon will be imposing strict border security measures to stem the influx of Syrian refugees.

“The details of the measures and how they will be implemented will be discussed in the meeting of the Higher Defense Council next week,” Charbel said in remarks published by Saudi daily Ash-Sharq al-Awsat on Thursday.

He also called on the Syrians who want to cross the border into Lebanon to “organize their legal paperwork to receive their residency permit that allows them to stay for a renewable period of up to six month.”

Lebanon is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which, according to the UN has killed more than 100,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese government imposed new entry controls on Syrians  in a bid to reduce friction between the host population and the 600,000 already in the country.
