Caretaker Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour said in remarks published on Wednesday that a number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon will move to Germany.
“In cooperation with the Higher Refugee Council, we have started to receive requests from Syrian families who wish to move to Germany,” Abu Faour told As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper.
He also said that the choice of the refugees who will move to the European country is based on social criteria rather than solely on the refugees’ political or religious affiliation.
“It will be based according to the numbers and percentages of each sect in Syria,” he added.
Meanwhile, the paper noted that around 5000 refugees are scheduled to move to Germany, with the majority arriving in August.
“A report published by the German Die Welt newspaper said that a number of refugees had already arrived in German,” As-Sharq al-Awsatreported.
It also noted that “the percentage of Christians among the refugees scheduled to arrive in Germany is big. They belong to the middle and upper class and are in accordance with the education criteria set by the German government.”
Lebanon has been facing difficulties dealing with the increasing number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against the regime, which has killed more than 100,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011.
