Campaigners criticize electoral law debate
BEIRUT: The Civil Campaign for Electoral Reform protested in downtown Beirut Sunday against the adoption of any new electoral law on based on sectarian divisions and demanded a quota for women.
The National News Agency reported that the protesters, who gathered at the Samir Kassir garden, held banners calling for legislation based on proportional representation and rejecting parliamentary elections being held with the results known in advance.
CCER secretary-general Adnan Melki said during the rally: “We will say no to any electoral law which enhances sectarianism in Lebanon and threatens the identity of Lebanon and its diversity.”
He added that CCER will stand against any attempt to postpone the elections or to pass an electoral law without taking into consideration long sought-after reforms. Melki also called for the voting age to be lowered to 18 years, a quota for women and more help for disabled people who wish to vote.
