Inmates at Tyre prison in the South rioted on Saturday to protest the transfer of a prisoner back to their division, the state-run National News Agency reported.
NNA said the prisoners burned mattresses and banged on the doors and windows of the facility when security forces sought to return an inmate, Najib Gharib, back to their division.
According to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3), Gharib had been previously transferred to Nabatiyeh prison for being a trouble-maker.
But calm returned to the prison only after Tyre police chief Capt. Abbas Ibrahim promised the rioters that Gharib will not return to the facility.
Roumieh prison, near Beirut, also witnessed a small riot on Friday when Islamist detainees demanded a general amnesty after the security personnel prevented a female visitor from meeting an inmate for not having a visit permit.
Lebanon's overcrowded prisons have witnessed riots on several occasions. The detainees have asked for better conditions.
