BEIRUT: Renovations being done on the notorious Roumieh Prison are due to be reassessed Tuesday after a meeting of senior politicians where the situation at the country’s detention facilities were discussed.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati raised the issue with, among others, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Samir Moqbel, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and caretaker Minister of State Marwan Kheireddine, in addition to representatives from relevant authorities responsible for the Roumieh renovations.
After the meeting, Moqbel said, “We will re-evaluate the funds which were paid and the work that has been completed so far, before taking a decision to finalize the project.”
In July, Charbel expressed outrage at the decrepit conditions in Roumieh’s infamous Block D despite the fact renovations on the building were nearing completion.
