BEIRUT: Around 36 percent of inmates in prisons are non-Lebanese, according to caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Qortbawi said recent statistics gathered by his ministry in coordination with the Internal Security Forces and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime showed that out of 5,343 inmates in the country’s prisons, Syrians make up just over 18 percent of the population with 977 inmates, while just over 9 percent are Palestinians (496 inmates) and over 8 percent (440 inmates) are from various other nationalities.
The statement also said most prisons are poorly equipped to match international standards. The minister also called for a meeting for judges on Sept. 20 to discuss prison conditions.
