BEIRUT: Caretaker Education Minister Hassan Diab extended the registration period for Lebanese and foreign students in public schools for the 2013/2014 academic year, the National News Agency said Saturday.
According to the decision, published by the NNA, the registration period was extended until Oct. 10, 2013 for new and returning Lebanese pupils as well as returning Syrian students.
With regard to Syrian students seeking to register for the first time for the 2013-2014 academic year, Diab called on schools to provide a list of the names of the pupils to regional heads of education who will take the required measures in accordance with available capacity.
U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees resident representative Ninette Kelley said earlier this week that even if the organization succeeds in enrolling 100,000 Syrian refugee children in Lebanese public schools this year, some 200,000 could remain outside the education system.
Last year, only 30,000 Syrian children were enrolled in public schools.
