Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati said that his country will not reject the Syrian refugees fleeing the violence raging in their country.

“Lebanon will not close its doors in the face of the Syrians, but we will review the case of any Syrian present in Lebanon who is not considered a refugee and who didn’t fulfill the legal requirements of his stay,” Miqati said in an interview with Euronews on Tuesday.

“The Lebanese state is also controlling the border… in order to prevent the increase in number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.”

Beirut is facing difficulties dealing with the increasingly high number of Syrian refugees who look to neighboring Lebanon for safe haven.

Earlier in the month, the United Nations’ refugee agency and the governments of Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey said during a meeting in Geneva that they will work together to seek an urgent and major expansion of international help for the region as it struggles to cope with the Syrian refugee crisis.
