BEIRUT: Caretaker Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi asked caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati to approve the payment of Lebanon’s share to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
A statement by the Finance Ministry Saturday said that Safadi sent a letter to Mikati, urging him to give special approval for securing funds to pay Lebanon’s annual 49 percent contribution to the STL’s budget.
The statement said the payment would be made in three installments to cover Lebanon’s share for the year 2013 which the ministry said amounted to L.L. 58 billion, or 29 million Euros.
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was established by the U.N. in 2007 to try the assassins of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The court is controversial in Lebanon, as it was slammed by Hezbollah as an American-Israeli tool to incite strife. The court indicted four Hezbllah members in the assassination in the summer of 2011.
Hezbollah denies any involvement in the killing.
