BEIRUT: Ireland will contribute 500,000 euros to UNRWA to assist Palestinian refugees coming from Syria to Lebanon, an Irish state official announced Monday.
The announcement came after Irish Minister of State Development and Trade Joe Costello visited various UNRWA-administered institutions in the refugee camp of Burj al-Barajneh, including the Toulkarem School, where he met with Palestinian students from Syria.
“Our contribution today recognizes the unprecedented scale of the humanitarian crisis, as well as the enormous demands on agencies such as UNRWA and the extraordinary generosity of Lebanon, which is now home to some 730,000 refugees from Syria,” Costello said.
UNRWA country director Ann Dismorr expressed her appreciation for Ireland’s contribution.
