BEIRUT: Police searched Fatah al-Islam prisoners Thursday in the notorious Roumieh Prison complex one week after an attempt to smuggle a chemical-filled sandwich was foiled.
Members of the Internal Security Forces brought in sniffer dogs and carried out a search operation inside the prison, particularly Block B where the Fatah al-Islam prisoners are being held, LBCI reported.
A reporter with the local television channel published pictures on his personal Twitter account showing what he said were Fatah al-Islam detainees being searched by police.
Earlier this month, wardens arrested a police officer for trying to smuggle a chemical substance inside sandwiches destined for prisoners with links to Fatah al-Islam.
Military Prosecutor Judge Saqr Saqr pressed charges last week against a policeman and six inmates, including five members of Fatah al-Islam, over the smuggling attempt.
The chemical “carbur” can produce an explosive chemical reaction if mixed with water and exposed to heat, a security source told The Daily Star.
