BEIRUT: Syrian refugees in Akkar implored the Qatari government Friday not to close down a medical center providing services in the region.
Hundreds of refugees from the areas of Akroum and Wadi Khaled staged a sit-in facing the Qatari-funded medical center in the Akkar border village of Kenayseh after they learned that the Qatari government had decided to close it.
A spokesman for the refugees, identified as Mohammad al-Waqyan, read aloud a statement on behalf of 50,000 Syrian refugees who benefit from the services provided by the center.
He pleaded with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamid al-Thani to “turn a caring eye to the refugees and their situation.”
He said that the burden on refugees had increased after the UNHCR shifted to a new targeted aid approach.
