BEIRUT: Military Prosecutor Judge Saqr Saqr sought over the weekend the indictment of 72 people over the deadly June clashes in Abra, south Lebanon, between armed supporters of Salafist Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir and the Lebanese Army, judicial sources told The Daily Star Sunday.
Saqr referred the case to Military Investigative Judge Riyad Abu Ghayda Saturday and requested an indictment against the 72 suspects, the sources said.
Forty-eight of the suspects have been detained, 16 are at large while authorities are still trying to determine the full identities of the remaining eight in order to detain them, the sources said.
Assir, an outspoken critic of Hezbollah and the regime of President Bashar Assad, and his followers were involved in fierce clashes in the Sidon suburb of Abra in June that left dozens of soldiers and Salafist fighters killed.
Dozens of people including Assir were charged with murder, arms possession and other crimes over the clashes.
Assir remains at large.
