BEIRUT: The health care system for prisoners suffers from a lack of resources, a Lebanese Red Cross official said during a joint conference with the Internal Security Forces Tuesday. “Administering and providing efficient and effective health services in the prisons is a hard task, because the prisoners suffer from a higher level of health risks and because the health care system for prisoners itself lacks resources,” deputy head of the Lebanese Red Cross Raoul Bittel said. Bittel’s comments were made during the second conference about health conditions in prisons. Bittel added that the International Committee for the Red Cross in Lebanon had worked closely with the ISF, Health Ministry and the medical center inside Roumieh’s detention center to enhance health services in prisons. Roumieh is the only prison that has a special medical center. He added that “access to medical services in other prisons managed by the ISF is still difficult.”
