BEIRUT – Military Investigative Judge Fadi Sawan issued arrest warrants against twelve soldiers who were accused of smuggling drugs into the infamous Roumieh Prison.

The military judge had questioned the soldiers over their alleged drug trafficking inside the jail, the National News Agency reported on Monday.

Islamist prisoners are held in Roumieh Prison’s Bloc B, which has been the scene of numerous riots and other security disturbances.

In November, As-Safir newspaper reported that a number of the inmates in the bloc were affiliated with the Al-Nusra Front and plotting terror attacks.

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said last Wednesday that weekly search operations will take place in the said bloc.
