BEIRUT - The number of refugees registered in Lebanon who have fled Syria’s violence has reached more than one million.

“The number of refugees registered with General Security has reached 1.065 million,” the caretaker Social Affairs Ministry told An-Naharnewspaper in remarks published Friday.

“There is a 12% increase of those who enter illegally, almost 51 thousand Palestinians coming from Syria and around 41 thousand Lebanese nationals returning to Lebanon,” the ministry added.

The ministry also told the Lebanese daily that 65% of refugees are present in North Lebanon and the Beqaa areas.

“Economic losses caused by this issue are estimated at $7.5 billion between 2012 and 2014.”

Lebanon has had difficulty dealing with the increasing number of refugees fleeing Syria’s violent uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, which has killed over 120,000 people.
